Begin your trek in the village of Abreha We Atsbeha after a short drive from Mekelle. Following a briefing and acclimatization, set off on a scenic hike to Yohannes Maaquidi, one of the oldest and most significant rock-hewn churches in the region. Perched dramatically on a cliffside, the church is renowned for its well-preserved frescoes and spiritual ambiance, making it an important pilgrimage site. After exploring the church, return to your campsite in the village of Debretsion for an overnight stay.
Start your day with a visit to Abune Abraham Debretsion, another historic church in the area, before embarking on a trek to Mariam Papaseiti. This relatively lesser-known rock-hewn church is set in a tranquil location, offering a peaceful and reflective atmosphere. The moderately challenging hike rewards trekkers with stunning views and a serene setting.
After exploring the church, return to your campsite in Mariam Papaseiti, where you’ll spend the night under the shade of a sycamore tree.
After breakfast, continue your journey to Mariam and Daniel Korkor, two incredible rock-hewn churches situated on a cliff with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys. The hike involves steeper sections, making it one of the more challenging parts of the trek, but the effort is well worth it. Take time to explore the unique rock formations, intricate murals, and serene environment. As the day winds down, enjoy a breathtaking sunset from the top of the Gheralta Mountains before camping overnight at the summit.
On the final day, set out early for the iconic trek to Abune Yemata Guh, one of the most famous and visually striking rock-hewn churches in the Gheralta Mountains. Reaching this church requires a physically demanding climb using footholds and handholds, but the effort is rewarded with panoramic views of the mountains and valleys. Abune Yemata Guh is celebrated for its vivid frescoes depicting Biblical scenes and Ethiopian saints, as well as its sacred and dramatic location.
After the trek, head back to Hawzen or Mekelle for your departure, concluding an unforgettable adventure.
